SEASON 3 · EPISODE 03
Abortion and the family doctor
Last week Bev and Jonas shared an interview with phenomenal family doctor, Robin Wallace, about all the amazing work she has done throughout her career.
While Outlawed has often highlighted OB-Gyn’s as clinicians providing abortion care, the truth is that many other types of doctors and advance practice clinicians are also doing this very important work in their communities. These folks include family physicians, pediatricians, ER doctors (just like The Pitt!), nurse midwives, and nurse practitioners.
THE CONVERSATION
Reproductive health care touches multiple decades and events in a patient’s lifetime. So why not get care from a provider who was there when you got your first period, sprained your ankle in college sports, or was there when you gave birth? Bev and Jonas talk with the amazing Dr. Robin Wallace about providing abortions as a family physician and why more medical specialties should do the same. Based on years practicing in multiple states before and after Dobbs, she helps untangle the complex web of policies and paperwork that make it harder for medical professionals to offer abortion to patients already coming to them for other care.
I feel really lucky to do this work, to still be doing this work where I feel like I can do it with my whole heart.
When abortion care is siloed it makes it harder for the doctor who has been caring for you your whole life to provide care that is important for you.
WHAT’S AHEAD THIS WEEK:
Get excited for our new episode coming out this week with lawyer and lifelong reproductive health advocate Jennifer Weiss-Wolf about her new book When in Menopause: A citizen’s guide and user manual. This episode covers menopause advocacy but her advice could be used as a blueprint for any type of health care advocacy.
