Dear Outlawed friends and family,
We are incredibly excited to share that we won a silver Signal Award in the category of conversation starter! While we lost the people’s choice award to Monica Lewinsky, we were totally psyched to wake up Tuesday morning to the news that we won silver! Thanks for your support and for believing in us. How awesome is it that our little independent abortion podcast got this recognition?!?

It was also pretty cool to see ourselves listed in Variety along with some pretty phenomenal podcasts.

SEASON 3 · EPISODE 06
When reproductive justice becomes a thriller
We talk with Hillary Frank about her new audiobook thriller, Wedlocked, which covers many of the same topics we address on the podcast: pain with IUD insertion, pregnancy choices, abortion. This book has it all!
Hillary Frank, a former contributor to This American Life, is a prolific writer and podcaster. We love Hillary’s work - her podcast Longest Shortest Time covers the trials and tribulations of parenting. I found her show when I was in the early days of parenting and found it helpful to know I wasn’t alone in the struggles that parents experience. She’s an outstanding storyteller and writer. Wedlocked is her first thriller and we were lucky enough to get a sneak peak of the book.
THE CONVERSATION
I love reading and Hillary’s book was my first audiobook. I love listening to podcasts, but for some reason I had hesitations about crossing over to audiobooks. As a goal-oriented person who strives to read 40 books a year as my Goodreads goal, does listening to a book count as reading? You’re probably thinking: Bev, maybe you should tell yourself that it doesn’t matter if you’re truly reading/listening for pleasure.
“So I really just hope people take that away, you know, don't tell women they're prettier when they smile, don't tell them to smile when they're walking down the street, and really respect women's choices about their bodies and how they're living their life.”
We talk about Hillary’s love of thrillers and the themes of the book that overlap with many of the topics we have talked about on Outlawed. We are grateful that Hillary joined us this week. Check out her podcast - The Longest Shortest Time!
WHAT’S HOT THIS WEEK
The new John Green book Hollywood, Ending — This is John Green’s first novel written for an adult audience and it’s #1 on my to-be-read list (aka top of the pile of books beside the couch). The reviews are outstanding.
Silvana Estrada — Part mexican folk singer, part opera singer, part songbird in human form - Silvana is a force. I was fortunate enough to see her live from the front row, and what a voice! I had chills the whole time. How lucky are we to be alive in a time when we get to hear Silvana sing? Here’s a link to her new album.
Here’s a new playlist, in case you need some new music in your life. My take on shared playlists is: if you find two new songs you enjoy, then you’ve found a winner. Let me know which songs were stand outs for you: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/4YEfQ9zzXma8JTBNXztbMQ?si=3d0684892297423d
ONE THING TO DO
We’re still in the running for an Anthem Award - you can show your love for our show by going to this link and celebrating the podcast. The Kim Mutcherson episode about criminalization in pregnancy is up for an award in the Health category for content and media (non-profit).
Talk soon,
