Since the Dobbs ruling, Telehealth abortion has been an important modality of care for patients throughout the US and for some patients in ban states, it may be one of the only options for care. Data from the WeCount study from SFP demonstrates the increase in Telehealth abortion over the past few years.
Data supports the safety of Telehealth abortion care and medication abortion now accounts for more than half of abortions in the US. Since it was approved by the FDA, more than 5 million people in the US have used the combination of mifepristone and misoprostol for their abortions. Research also supports the use of mifepristone use to increase the efficacy for patients who prefer to have medication management of miscarriage care.
Telehealth not only increases access for patients living under abortion care bans, but also increases access where abortion is permitted. People seeking abortion care are juggling busy lives; 60% of folks seeking abortion care are already parents and others are navigating hectic work and school schedules. For those who want to pursue medication abortion, Telehealth can help them navigate the logistics of their lives with affordable, safe, and flexible care.
