Maybe you’re not an OB-gyn and might be wondering “what the heck are CREOGs?” A new kind of donut? A particularly loud flightless bird? Why would you have them with coffee? The CREOG exam is the yearly in-service exam that all OB-gyn trainees take each year. Back in 2018, 2 very industrious trainees at Brown (Nick Burns and Fei Chi), started CREOGs over coffee, a podcast for those studying for the CREOG exam. Each episode covers a topic related to our field and interviews an expert in that area of medicine. For busy trainees on the go, CREOG’s over coffee is a perfect way to learn new content in an evidence based way. The episode we shared this week is an important topic related to early pregnancy management - Pregnancy of unknown location. The big scary thing we are trying to figure out is whether or not someone has an ectopic pregnancy. Ectopic remains the number one killer in the 1st trimester and early identification and intervention can be life-saving for patients with this condition. We have seen many examples of patients receiving inadequate care for ectopic pregnancies in states with strict abortion bans, at times leading to complications or death. This highlights the fact that abortion bans not only impact abortion care, but other types of care adjacent to abortion, like ectopic pregnancy and miscarriage management.
We shared an episode of Outlawed with listeners of CREOGs over coffee a few months back. At that time we created the Outlawed Curriculum, with 5 different abortion topic modules. Each module includes episodes, readings, learning objectives, and discussion questions with each topic. If you or someone you know wants to learn more about abortion, use this guide to increase your knowledge!
What else is on our minds this week? We’re gearing up for Season 3 and we’re excited about what is in store for you all! We will kick off the season in September with a couple of episodes about a topic that has been getting a lot of attention: IUDs and pain (or rather, IUDs and inadequate pain control).
Need some new music? Here are a few artists that I’ve been listening over the past few weeks, some new and some old. Most very catchy.
