In our last episode, we discussed with Susan Burton (creator and host of The Retrievals) why IUDs have been getting a bad rap. Or, more specifically, why healthcare providers who underestimate people’s pain may deserve a bad rap. We have tools and medications that can help us do better, so it’s time to start using them.
This week, we talk to Dr. Ghazaleh Moayedi, a Complex Family Planning specialist (like Jonas and Bev) based in Dallas Texas. Dr. Moayedi is one of those providers who you just know would bring a lot of joy to the exam room. In fact, joy is one of the core values of the Pegasus Health Justice Center in Dallas, a clinic she founded and where she provides the best IUD placement in Texas.

Dr. Moayedi helps us review the evidence for different options for pain control during IUD placement. She also talks about how her personal experiences and years of practice have helped develop her thinking on the approach to pain control for office procedures.

As promised… the story behind our podcast photos. We are lucky to have many talented friends of the podcast and one of those friends is L&D nurse and photographer extraordinaire, Kristen Hammock. You should check out her work online. She takes amazing empowerment (AKA boudoir) photography. When the second season rolled around and we needed some art that included photos of us, I immediately thought - we should go to one of those old-timey photo places and dress up like cowboys/outlaws. Turns out the closest one is a few hours away or at Dollywood (which would have been amazing) but we didn’t have time for that. I reached out to Kristen to see if she had ideas and she was ALL IN! She created an amazing photoshoot experience out at the Duke Homestead. Amazing, except for the fact that it was July and 97 degrees. You probably can’t tell, but we’re both soaked with sweat and wearing ice-packs to keep cool. I don’t know how the real cowboys do it. We were out there for an hour and I was begging for air conditioning. Our wardrobe was donated by a colleague who just so happened to have a wide variety of belt buckles, holsters, and cowboy hats. Her work was amazing and perfect for the podcast. |
Photo with Kristen below. Note the sweat dripping. |
