Which superhero pair comes to mind when you think about fighting off evil forces? Batman and Robin? She-ra and He-Man? Rocky Raccoon and Groot? You probably don’t have a sociologist and lawyer pair on your list, but I would argue that you should!
We had a fantastic conversation this week with Dr. Carole Joffe and Law Professor David Cohen about their work together and how the Dobbs decision has impacted patients across the US. Carole is a sociologist at UCSF and David is a law professor at Drexel. Together they have written two books and we talk about their most recent book - “After Dobbs: How the Supreme Court ended Roe but not abortion.”
One of the things we love about the book is how they structured the chapters to focus on the before, during, and after Dobbs’ for a variety of folks providing care throughout the US. They showed how clinic leaders, advocates, and clinicians coped with drastic changes and pivoted to help their community when abortion bans went into place. The community providing care is resilient and creative. This book highlights the humanism of those providing care and going above and beyond to provide care where access was possible.
Another highlight of the book is that in the second chapter they outline all the previous legal cases related to abortion access in the most succinct way we have yet to come across.
